On Sunday, actress Shaku Yumiko (30) revealed on her blog that she has the incurable disease 'Guillain-Barré syndrome, short GBS' after she went to a medical checkup. The days before she already showed light symptons of having no power in her hands and feet. However, she later received a 2nd explanation from the doctor who happened to read her blog and he explained that - "Her symptons are only at the level of a periphal neuritis." At the same day she already removed that post, replaced it with a new message saying that everything is alright and continued to write her usual blog entries.
Shaku's post about her illness really caused a lot of uproar among her fans.
On the 17th she reported on her blog that she caught a cold the day before and that her body temperature exceeded 40°C (104°F). Then on the 22nd she said that she had a "temporary feeling of paralys" in her hands and feet the day before. "I couldn't move my body anymore" - and therefore she went to the hospital where they diagnosed 'Guillain-Barré syndrome'. She explained all that in the message from the 22nd.
Later she posted that her symptons where only of a light degree. "I think that a periphal nerve was paralyzed. In my case I can be treated very early, plus it's only of a slight degree.. it won't be an hindrance in my daily life anymore. The doctor said that I will be completely recovered in 1 week and that I should rest for 2 or 3 days before resuming my work."
She was lucky that it was nothing more than an after-affect of her cold, because in other cases like that of the actress Oohara Reiko (62) or former Foreign Minister Kawaguchi Yoriko (68) the heavy symptomns made it difficult for them to walk and they were forced to rest for several months.
According to Shaku's agency, the doctor who made her first diagnosis contacted her again after reading her blog and explained that her symptoms weren't has severe as he thought they were. "I'd diagnose that you are only having an elementary periphal neuritis." After hearing his explanation she immediately removed the message from her blog, so that not more of her fans would start to become worried about her condition.
Instead she wrote a new message with the title - "Don't worry." - without even mentioning 'GBS' anymore. "I'm alright again. My cold went away and my physical condition returned to normal, I'm as vigorous as always. I'm very sorry for making you worry so much and all the comments that followed."
Her agency also made clear that there's no hindrance for her work as an actress. "Right now her hands and feet feel a little like they are asleep, but it's no problem for her daily life or her work." It's obvious that all her fans must be really relieved to hear that. You'll be able to see Shaku in the dorama SP on Fuji TV called "How to marry a woman with blood type B" on the 24th (1 of 4 stories as I mentioned in an earlier news article).
